Resilience Doesn't Just Happen
It was May 2020 and I got laid off from my job due to COVID, a job I had only been at since February 2020, a job that caused me to relocate from Edmonton, AB Canada to Eagleville, PA.
I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do, so I started researching and finding out how to deal with everything. I was lucky enough to come across the work of Linda Hoopes of Resilience Alliance.
Most people think resilience is something you have or do not have, but it actually can be developed, just like your muscles. Linda has researched this (https://prosilience.com/) and identified the building blocks for resilience and 7 characteristics of resilience.
Positivity: See possibilities and hope in challenging situations
Confidence: Engage your energy in approaching challenges
Priorities: Direct your energy toward your most important goals
Creativity: Generate a wide range of possibilities and ideas
Connection: Draw on others for resources and support
Structure: Apply organization and discipline to use energy efficiently
Experimenting: Take action in the face of uncertainty and learn by doing
If there was ever a time to build my resilience muscles, it was now.
I personally worked with Linda and after seeing the results from my Personal Resilience Profile (PRP) I learned I had to strengthen my Priorities characteristic. I did a lot of reflection work and decided too pack up my apartment, put my belongings in storage and drive right back to Edmonton, AB. This time, I wasn’t alone, I had the companionship of my new cat Micky.
I was hurt, frustrated and disappointed for sure. But I now had the tools to cope, to thrive and I knew I wanted to get certified in the program so I could share these tools with others.
